This is the Singel, the ring-road around a certain northern European city. It forms a physical and psychological barrier, metal and concrete, between the city proper and the 'parking' that surrounds it: the Zone Grens (Flemish = "Zone Border"), a place of contrasts and contradictions, liminal, unheimlich. A hawk swoops past red poppies, a few paces from a dumped blue plastic toilet. Concealed behind an abandoned, dilapidated warehouse is a quiet patch of water with swans and coots. Concrete blocks turn out to be a sculptural installation, a whimsical arcade of pink arches was a slaughterhouse.
This was my lockdown project for 2021. A 60-page booklet is also available.
